Jesus, My Father, The CIA, and Me - Book Review

   “Jesus, My Father, The CIA, and Me” written by Ian Morgan Cron, is an amazing written story on the authors life, growing up with an alcoholic father and dealing with the ups and downs that comes with that. Ian was born into a family, who seemed to be well off. He had an English nanny, a loving mom, and siblings. Yet he struggled with his relationship with his dad, who put himself and his drinking before everyone else. He was never really there for him, never got that father son relationship he always dreamed for which lead Ian to search out different lifestyles. He tried to play the “bad boy” role, hoping it would get his dad to notice him…causing him to go downhill from there. He eventually realized the bad boy role didn’t work so he decided to switch it up to being the “good boy". He strived to be great at everything, but even in that, he realized nothing was working to get his father’s attention. All while finding out his father was in the CIA most of his life. Ian went through a lot of confusing times, trying to fill that void of having a pretty much, nonexistent father.

   There’s a lot of sadness in this book and it was hard for me to get in to at first, but I’m so glad I stuck it out and read the whole thing. Reading this brought back some sad memories of my dad who was also an alcoholic, but it also reminded me that God is and always will be helping me cope through my past too. I loved how Ian ended the book with talking about his own family. He, his wife, their two girls and their boy went swimming at the quarry, which had four different ledges to jump into the water from. Each ledge was higher than the one before; his daughters were both daring and bold like their mom, their son, more scarcely like his father-but he would jump if his dad was always there to catch him. The way Ian described their trips to the quarry and the fun they had…it was really touching. It made me so happy and brought tears to my eyes to read that Ian’s son is getting the love from a father that Ian never got.
